Intervener Training Resources for State Deaf-Blind Projects

Collage of interveners working with children.

The resources on this page are available for state deaf-blind projects to use for intervener training. NCDB also provides technical assistance to state projects on the use of these materials. If you have any questions or need assistance, contact Kristi Probst, Interveners & Qualified Personnel Initiative Lead, at kristi.probst@hknc.org.

Note: Many of the resources on this page are aligned with the Council for Exceptional Children's knowledge and skill competencies for interveners that was published in 2015. Over time, the resources will be updated to reflect a new version of the competencies published in 2022.

OHOA Modules

The Open Hands, Open Access: Deaf-Blind Intervener Learning Modules were designed specifically for state deaf-blind projects and colleges/universities to use as part of intervener training programs. On their own, the modules do not serve as a training program. They must be offered as part of comprehensive training and coaching provided by qualified individuals.

National Intervener Certification E-Portfolio (NICE)

NICE is an assessment process that interveners can use to submit evidence of their knowledge and skills. The evidence, which consists of digital documentation such as video samples, described pictures, and other documents from an intervener’s training and practice, is evaluated by expert reviewers in the field of deaf-blindness. The process is aligned with the Council for Exceptional Children's (CEC) knowledge and skill competencies for interveners.

Intervener Training Pilot Project Materials

The following materials were developed for a one-time Intervener Training Pilot Project (ITPP) conducted by NCDB during September 2017 through May 2018. The program used the OHOA Modules and NICE in conjunction with consultation and coaching by state deaf-blind projects. The materials can be adapted by state projects for their own intervener training needs.
